We Won an Applied Arts Magazine Award!

We won a thing! Though it appears they posted the main image a l'il low res... This was a collaboration with drag artist Bom Bae, Silencia Eyewear, makeup artist Darryl De Sousa.

Alex Russel rigged the weird old lens we used, because he is a mad scientist. You can see the full winners list and our award winning images at : https://www.appliedartsmag.com/winners/photography/bomboy-experiments-in-colour-with-drag-performer-bom-bae-w2/?year=2021&fbclid=IwAR0vt_uhseWjvkacwj5p1NkaG-UgzocsxOiDYnFppynib2UMV8QliHOuHJ0

The print edition comes out in June.

Sometimes you can buy all the right gear, and sometimes you make it yourself! For this collaboration we didn't have a digital optical snoot, so we built one ourselves for the first image. We used an old theatre projection lens from an army surplus store, some Plexiglas, a red gel, with a hand-cut paper for a gobo, resulting in a kind of camera obscura in the back of the lens. The glasses were designed & lovingly laser cut by Silencia Eyewear.

We backlit this using a Paul C Buff light and large octabox. Strip boxes were on the left and right side of the model, with the key lighting shooting through a gobo that was at the back of an old theatre lens (allowing us to focus the shape of the projected gobo). For the final shot, the red gel was placed in front of the lens, not at the back like in the behind the scenes photo below.
